As professional family photographers in Auckland, we at Boutique Lifestyle Photography are often asked for advice as to outfits and colours when booking a family photo shoot. This guide below provides some helpful advice which you may wish to consider.
1. It is not essential for you to try and match clothing colours exactly. While this does work well by achieving a ‘uniform’ look, using complimentary colours is also a great way to make your portraits look for cohesive and professional while still retaining some individuality. More important is to dress in a similar style to one another, such as smart-casual or formal, for example.
2. Prior to your photo shoot, become aware of your home’s décor and the colours that are present. You may wish to choose colours that compliment your existing décor, whether this be the colour of your walls, or existing pieces of art.
3. Try and avoid excessive patterns on your clothing, as these styles constantly change and will date more rapidly. Rather, try for a more timeless look which will still look great for many years to come.
4. Feel free to bring along any accessories that you like to wear. Be aware to avoid highly reflective items, such as large watches, which may cause issues.
5. It’s all in the details! Don’t forget to plan ahead, making sure your clothing and outfits are both clean and ironed. Avoiding creases and dirt can go a long way to making your portraits look more striking and professional.
6. Above all else, choose clothing that you feel comfortable in! Trying for a new look for your photo shoot may not pay off. Rather, stick to the tried and tested styles that you know flatter you the most. If you do want to try and achieve a different feel to your portraits, be sure to try out some different options prior to your session, so you can arrive feeling confident and prepared.
